Is your mind constantly racing day in and day out? Do you find it difficult to sleep at night? Are you experiencing an increase in anxiety due to overthinking?
If your answer is yes to any of these questions you’re in the right place. I am guilty of overthinking – worrying about the future and having anxiety about the past. By doing this your stress level is high and you are not at peace.
So what is the magic key to stop overthinking and start living now?
First, you must let go of the past. Not one person on this earth has escaped experiencing suffering. We all have experienced some level of suffering throughout our lives. We don’t like to suffer because it is painful. However, it is part of the human experience and if we were to switch our perspective about why we are experiencing pain, I believe we will understand the lessons in which we need to learn.
For example, if one or both of your parents weren’t present while you were growing up. If you then internalized their absence as somehow being your fault or you’ve compared yourself to other children who had both parents in the home. Chances are as an adult you might deal with low self-worth, low self-esteem, and possibly attracting men or women who come in and out your life like a revolving door.
Our experiences do not reflect who we are.
An absentee parent shouldn’t communicate to you that something was wrong with you or that you should be valued less. Let alone a spouse who doesn’t value you and doesn’t honor their commitment. The only person who can determine your worth, your value, and who are inside and out – is you.
It is what you believe that determines who you will be.
Secondly, stop worrying about the future because it hasn’t happened yet. I believe that when you trust in yourself, the universe and/or god, and you have faith that everything will work out as it should. This allows you to be at peace in the present moment. It is too often that we ruin our present moment worrying about what would, could, should happen. With trust, intention, and action we want will manifest in divine timing.
Be present and start living now
This is something that doesn’t come easy for someone who is an overthinker. When you are used to spending your time in the past or the future you have to train yourself to be in the now.
First, you have to bring your awareness to the present moment. Much like when you’re meditating, your thoughts will constantly drift off to the past or the future. Once you become aware that this is happening you must then decide to bring attention to the present moment.
Don’t criticize yourself for having to continuously do this for long periods of time. Be patient with yourself and do it until it becomes the new norm. It takes time to break old habits and new learn new ones.
